Learn how to properly complete customs forms and ship packages internationally with confidence
International shipping follows the same process as domestic shipping, with one important addition: customs documentation. We automatically generate all required customs forms using the information you provide. The process is straightforward and requires just two main steps: classifying your package contents and listing the items inside.
Every international package must be classified into one of these categories:
Commercial goods being sold or traded. Important: Recipients may need to pay import taxes and duties. Each item requires a harmonized tariff number for customs processing.
Personal gifts with no commercial value. Generally not subject to import taxes, though value limits may apply by country.
Papers, contracts, letters, or other documents. Package must be an envelope less than ¼ inch thick.
Items being returned to the sender or manufacturer. Original purchase documentation may be required.
Product samples with no commercial value, typically for evaluation or testing purposes.
You must declare at least one item in your package. Customs officials can detect empty packages, and failing to declare contents may result in delays or seizure.
All international shipments require an Export Control Legend or Proof of Filing Citation:
Use "NOEEI 30.37(a)" (automatically set)
You must obtain an AES Internal Transaction Number (ITN) from the AESDirect website
Merchandise shipments require harmonized tariff numbers (HS codes) for each item. These 6-10 digit codes classify your products for customs and determine applicable duties.
Important: The recipient (person receiving the package) is responsible for paying any customs duties, taxes, and clearance fees imposed by their country. These fees are separate from shipping costs.
Recipients should check with their country's customs office for specific rates and requirements.
Shipments valued over $2,500 or containing restricted items may require export licenses. Check with the U.S. Census Bureau's Automated Export System for requirements.
